Why do members of the LDS church admire Nephi so much? What did this guy do that was so special? Let me explain just a couple of the many examples as to why Nephi was such a noble man, looking specifically in 1 Nephi 1-5 of the Book of Mormon.
These first few chapters of the Book of Mormon are a critical time in Nephi's life. His father tells his family that he has had a vision from God, where angels were descended unto him to deliver him a book. In this book, he reads that the city Jerusalem (in which the live) shall be destroyed because of its wickedness. Therefore, he has been commanded to pick up his family and move to the wilderness.
Woah. First of all, imagine being Nephi and hearing your dad telling you and your family that you need to pick up everything you have, and go. Leave behind your cell phone, your best friends, your TV, internet... everything. Nephi must have had a lot of trust in the Lord to be obedient to his dad.
After this, his dad, Lehi, tells Nephi and his two brothers that the Lord wants them to obtain these special gold plates from the not-so-friendly king. Willingly, Nephi obeys his father. This took him three tries to enter into the kingdom and finally successfully get the plates. Each time was especially hard, except for the third one. Nephi was so obedient to the Lord that he was sent an angel to tell him exactly how he is to get the plates. Success! This worked!
Because of Nephi's obedience and faith in the Lord, he was able to be successful in fulfilling his commandments. We admire Nephi because he doesn't doubt the word of the Lord and he is willing to do God's work before his own. I know that if we strive to be willing to serve and listen to the spirit like Nephi was, that we will have our own success and we will find true happiness.
